Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) delivers vacuum-assisted pressure below the wound surface to help promote healing. NPWT consists of a wound dressing (foam or gauze), a drainage tube inserted into the dressing, and a transparent film that are connected to a suction device.

Indications for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

NPWT is particularly effective at:

Promoting granulation tissue formation
Reducing bacterial burden
Restoring moisture balance
Improving perfusion

NPWT is indicated for patients with the following wound types:

Chronic
Acute
Traumatic
Sub-Acute and dehisced wounds
Ulcers (such as pressure or diabetic)
Partial-thickness burns
Flaps and Grafts

NPWT is contraindicated for:

Necrotic tissue with eschar
Untreated osteomyelitis
Malignancy in wound (with exception of palliative care to enhance quality of life)
Exposed arteries, veins, organs or nerves
Non-enteric and unexplored fistulas
Anastomotic sites
